Some people follow a mainly vegetarian diet because they can't afford to consume meat. Evolving as a vegetarian has become more appealing and affordable, gratitude to the year-round availability of fresh produce, more vegetarian catering service dining choices, and the growing culinary impact of cultures with broadly plant-based diets.
Traditionally, studies into vegetarianism concentrated mainly on potential nutritional deficiencies. Still, the pendulum has turned the other way in current years, and studies confirm the health benefits of meat-free eating. Nowadays, plant-based eating is recognized as nutritionally sufficient and as a way to reduce the risk of many chronic diseases. According to the American Dietetic Association, "appropriately prepared vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally good, and may supply health benefits in preventing and treating certain diseases."
"Appropriately planned" is the operative term. Unless you follow recommended nutrition, fat consumption, and weight control guidelines, becoming a vegetarian food won't necessarily be good for you. A diet of cheese, pizza, and candy, after all, is technically "vegetarian." For health, it's important to make certain that you consume a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. It's also important to replace saturated and trans fats with good fats, such as nuts, olive oil etc. And consistently keep in mind that if you consume too many calories from nutritious, low-fat, plant-based foods, you'll gain weight. So it's also necessary to practice portion control, read food labels, and engage in regular physical activity.
